Niagara FC 2 - Rangers 2

Post  Neal4 on Mon May 02, 2016 3:35 pm

A better headline for this post probably would have been "Young Guys 2 - Veterans 2" because that was the story of the game. Our average age is just slightly over 19, while theirs is roughly 25. This definitely played a part late in the game. We showed with 3 subs (as 7 of our players are still away at school) but Kyle Grimaldi tweaked an existing injury in warmups so we played with only 2; Rangers had 4-5 subs I believe.

To start the game we dominated possession and the scoring chances. The youthfulness of our team really showed as we were able to outpace a lot of their guys and moved the ball around well. A majority of the first half was played in their end with them getting a handful of opportunities on the counter. After missed a few opportunities and couldn't connect on a handful of crosses, the first goal of the game was put in by Seth Rougeux after he was played in nicely by Mike Thompson and was able to find the bottom left corner from the right side of the 18. Ranger's best chance of the half came from when they played a long ball from deep in their half that found its way to a streaking Ranger's winger who flew past our outside back. Their player took a relatively large touch which caused Lucas Robinson to come out of net to try and win it. Their player was able to get a toe on it and poke it wide of Lucas as he slid in which resulted in Lucas taking down their player just outside the box. There were some calls for a red card which were quickly squashed by the ref and Lucas was shown a yellow. The resulting FK was placed wide and was not very threatening. Later into the half Rangers made a push into our end but lost the ball and I was able to start a counter attack by finding Nick Colao open around midfield. He then played a thru-ball into Charles Stube who took a few touches down the right side and crossed it into Evan Scales who buried it to make it 2-0, which is how the half ended.

The first 15-20 minutes of the second half was pretty similar to how the first half went. We had a number of chances, two of them being 1v1 breaks on the GK; the first of which Thompson attempted to chip the GK but put it over the bar, the second their GK made a save on Colao's shot knocking it wide. It was with about 25 minutes left that Rangers really start to break through and start having some quality chances. A lot of our guys began to tire and Rangers was able to stay fresh and keep on the pressure, something you would expect from a savvy group of veterans like them. Their first big chance came from a FK from about 25 yards out on the right side of the field after I was forced to foul (and subsequently take a yellow card) a Rangers forward to stop an odd numbered rush. The resulting FK was whipped in back post where Robinson was forced to come out and make a great save. Around the 15 minute mark Rangers scored their first goal off an absolute rocket from around the 18 that found the upper right corner of net and left Lucas no chance. They then scored another maybe 5-6 minutes later off of a header from a corner. We got a chance with about 2 minutes left to go back ahead when a dangerous cross was put into the box, but their defender got a head on it and their GK was able to making a diving save to keep it out. Rangers then countered hard and won a FK just inside of our half close to the sideline with about 20 seconds left. The FK was played into the middle of the box and Lucas came out to make a play on it so I dropped in behind him to protect the goal. The ball wound up falling in the box right to a Rangers player who had a shot that I was able to stretch and clear off the goal line, immediately after which the ref blew the whistle and ended the game.

While losing a 2-0 lead isn't ideal, it was a majority of our guys first BDSL game and first game playing together so it was a quality result under those circumstances. Max Montante & Rougeux shone on the wings consistently creating chances and beating their opposing counterpart, while Donald Minderler & Paul Malinowski were quality at in the middle of the field for us. Liam McIntosh was superb at CB as usual, and backup GK Lucas Robinson did a solid job filling in for ModicaAmore.
