BUSS 4 Yemen Elite 2

Post  B_Calvaneso on Sun May 08, 2016 10:27 pm

-We opened the scoring on a free kick that went back post to Ian Martin. Luckily he has a 3 inch vertical jump or he would have headed it straight down. Instead he got a decent touch on it and put it off the crossbar. It bounced straight down and into the backside of Josh Hammer, who had lost sight of the ball, off his heel and into the back of the net. Just how we planned it.
1-0 BUSS
-Elite takes a corner kick, it catches Matt Daddario off guard, and when he tried to punch it out it hits Rich Gordon in the back and right to an Elite player who tapped it in.
1-1
-We took the lead back when Ian sent a ball down the line to Kyle Clifford who froze the defender with a step-over and flew past him down the wing, cut inside and neatly bent the ball into the side panel.
2-1 BUSS
-Elite tied the game up when a free kick came in and it skipped off of Mike Malcolm's leg and into the net for an OG.
2-2
-A sent ball finds Polo Suazo in the gap between the Elite CB and RB in the air. Polo delivered a neat flick off his head to a rushing Kyle Clifford, who headed it past Scott and into the corner.
3-2 BUSS
-Frank Poppolo hit a nifty turn and ripped a rocket left foot shot that the keeper could not control. It bounced off him and out about 10 yards where Mate Tarr one-timed it into the net off the keepers finger tips.
4-2 BUSS Final

My take:
Overall Yemen probably had the better of possession. We played the game how we wanted to, clogging up the middle of the field where Elite's playmakers Mateo and Sami were lined up. We gave up the wings in hope that our taller CB's would be able to adhere to the crosses, which worked out well for us. We seemed to have a bit of an issue stringing passes together, specifically in the first half. But there was acres of space for our forwards against Elite's 3 man backline. Our counter game was on point leading to two of our goals.

Game ball goes to Kyle Clifford, who was unstoppable today, scoring 2 goals for us and generating plenty of opportunities.

The field was decent, the officiating was average to above average, with a few clear fouls not being called. A yellow was given to Prince Saysay for a rough tackle, but nearly the same foul happened minutes later with no yellow given. He could have given a few more yellows and had more control of the game, but it wasn't necessarily out of hand.

2 years in a row we have gotten the better of Elite on their home field. There were very similar conditions today as last years rain soaked debacle. Maybe the game would have been a bit prettier on a nicer day but we are glad to get the W.
Good luck to Elite the rest of the way...they will find their form soon enough. It is there, they have the players for it.

In all fairness, our recent form has not given any indication we were improving.
