Celtic United 3 Lazio 1

Celtic United showed up to this game minus some very important players. We started the game with 2 subs. Lazio had 4(?) at the start. With possession more in favor of Lazio, Celtic had to make a breakthrough on the counter. About 20 minutes in, Celtic was awarded a penalty on a handball in the box. Matt Albrecht stepped up and placed a quality strike low to the keepers right. The keep ranged as far as he could and made a tremendous save. Celtic then turned one of those counter attacks into a goal by Joel Patrick. I think Joel suprised the keep with a left footed grass-cutter to the corner.

Half Celtic 1 -Lazio 0

The second half was more of the same and Celtic hit Lazio on the counter again about 20 minutes into the second half. A ball over the top set Joel off from midfield. Joel out muscled 3 Lazio defenders into the box and toe-poked the keeper from about 9 yards. Celtic then played a tactical decision to absorb pressure that cost us. Lazio (to their credit) never stopped pushing and scored on a well placed strike. After that Lazio pushed hard and we kept them at bay. With about 10 to go Celtic scored on a free kick lazer by Tom Steffanucci to seal the win. Good luck Lazio the rest of the way. Class guys on a really good team!!

I think all the Celtic Old Guys might chime in after this big upset. Maybe Lazio came out a little flat for this, but the result was no fluke, as we certainly out-chanced the skilled Lazio side in this match. Joel Patrick really kept the Lazio backs busy in their end and that helped keep them at bay. The rest of the Celtic squad did a great job of de-fusing the Lazio attack when they pushed forward. This was a very rewarding win, when considering that so many key players were missing for the Bhoys. Thanks to the Celtic Premier Bhoys for coming out to support ...and bringing lots of beer!!! A big thumbs up to the gracious Lazio team, many of which hung around for a beer with us. Hail, Hail Celtic!!

Congrats to Celtic United. Good to see a storied team have a result like this. Looks like all you guys needed to do was ditch that lousy keeper you had last year....
